Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination being conducted and administered by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology. It is conducted by the National Coordination Board GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
In the present competitive scenario, where there is mushrooming of universities and engineering colleges, the only yardstick to measure and test the caliber of engineering students is the GATE. There is a misconception among students that GATE exam is meant for ME./M.Tech which finally leads to a teaching career only.
In this context, the following points are worth noting about this examination:
- The GATE score/rank is used for admissions to Post Graduate Programmes (ME, M.Tech, MS, Direct Ph.D.) in institutes like IITs and IISc etc with financial assistance offered by MHRD.
- PSUs too use the GATE scores for recruiting candidates for various prestigious jobs with attractive remuneration.
- Many public sector undertakings such as BHEL, Indian Oil Corporation, NTPC, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (there are PSUs totalling 217 in number) are using the GATE score for selecting candidates for their organizations.
- Teaching: Professor, Asst. Professor at IITs, NITs, reputed educational institutes etc.
- Students who qualify in GATE are entitled to a stipend of Rs 8,000 per month during their M.Tech course. Better remuneration is being offered for students of M.Tech/M.E as compared to those pursuing B.Tech /B.E.
- A good GATE rank assures a good job.
- After joining M.Tech. at IITs and IISc, one can look at a salary package ranging from Rs 7 lakh to 30 lakh per annum, depending upon specialisation and performance.
- Clearing GATE is also an eligibility clause for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories. M.Tech. degree is mandatory for those wishing to apply for research positions in R&D centres.
- Junior Research Fellow: ISRO, DRDO, BARC, CSIR, IITs etc.
- Senior Research Fellow: ISRO, DRDO, BARC, CSIR, IITs etc.
- Junior Research Associates/ Senior Project Associates
The following candidates are eligible to appear in GATE :
- Bachelor’s degree holders in Engineering/Technology (4 years after 10+2 or 3 years after B.Sc./Diploma in Engineering/ Technology) and those who are in the final year of such programs.
- Bachelor’s degree holders in Architecture (Five years course) and those who are in the final year of such programs.
- Bachelor’s degree holders of Four-year program in Science (B.S.) and those who are in the final year of such programs.

- Holders of Four-year Integrated Master’s degree (Post B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology and those who are in the second or higher year of such programs.
- Holders of Five-year Integrated Master’s degree or Dual Degree in Engineering/Technology and those who are in the fourth or higher year of such programs.
- Holders of Five-year integrated M.Sc. or Five-year integrated B.Sc./M.Sc. degree and those who are in the final year of such programs.
- Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE/ MHRD as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed Section A of AMIE or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.
Make preparation strategy as simple as possible. Just follow five steps:
- Plan
- Study standard Books
- Solve previous year papers
- Revise
- Give Mock Test.
Plan
You must list the chapters covered in GATE Syllabus and allotted time to each accordingly. Important Topics with heavy weightage like Data Structures and Algorithm got around 14 days for preparation while lesser important topics like Digital Logic got 6 days.
GATE Syllabus Topics | Weightage (marks) | Days for preparation |
Engineering Mathematics | 15 | 20 |
Digital Logic | 5 | 6 |
Programming | 5 | 3 |
Data Structures and Algorithms | 14 | 14 |
Theory of Computation | 7 | 7 |
Computer Networks | 10 | 14 |
Computer Organization and Architecture | 9 | 5 |
Operating System | 9 | 14 |
Databases | 7 | 12 |
Compiler Design | 4 | 6 |
Verbal/Numerical Ability | 15 | 4 |
Total | 100 | 105 |
Study standard Books
We would recommend all the future GATE aspirants to read only the latest edition of the books.
Solve previous year papers
Study a particular topic and attempt the past 10 years question papers for that topic only. Practice previous year question papers and analyze the weak topics and concentrate more on those topics. Candidates must try to solve the papers in a given time limit to obtain an idea as to how many questions are solved within the allotted time.
Revise
Candidate should proper revision in last months
Give Mock Test
The online test very closely resembles the actual GATE examination. The test series helped you during time of revision.
Do not make wild guess as there is negative marking associated with the questions.
